An Artist's Studio within a School

Today was day one of a Public Art Commission I have been selected to complete by the Department for Education & Science. The School is Scoil Diarmada in Castledermot Co. Kildare, consisting of 12 Classrooms and 315 students.

I have always been interested in the idea that works created within a public art commission context should somehow grow from the surrounding environment rather than being implanted into the space or place. While discussing the project with the teachers, the idea came about to set up a working space within the school in order that the work carried out could be clearly visible to the students, teachers and staff members of the school. In particular, the working methods, ie research, materials, hours spent on art pieces could be appreciated by the school community giving a sense of ownership and understanding of the artworks.

Whilst maintaining the studio, I am also undertaking a series of workshops with the students. These workshops are based on ideas of memory, drawing and mapping - all integral elements to my practice.
